Mark Richey Woodworking Shop Foreman Chris Plante (pictured left) was a judge at The Furniture Trust Eco-Carpentry Challenge in Boston recently. Technical high schools from around the state were challenged with taking used furniture and wood (some donated by Mark Richey Woodworking) and making these items into something functional that can be donated back to the community.

These schools specialize in the technical trades that can offer kids the opportunity to develop the necessary skills that can lead to jobs in fields such as carpentry, metal fabrication, graphic design, construction, and building maintenance. Over the past few months, I had the opportunity to mentor students from Madison Park Technical Vocational High School in Jamaica Plains, MA, who had previously won the people’s choice award.

The Hogwarts Express seems to race out of a tunnel as part of the bed. A bookcase painted with suitcases and a desk with wizardry whimsy stand by, ready to ignite imagination. This Harry Potter-themed bedroom unit was created by students at Shawsheen Valley Technical High School, amazingly out of a pile of junk.

Weymouth Mayor Hedlund unveils major capital improvements to Town’s senior center

A ribbon cutting ceremony at the Whipple Senior Center unveiled the first phase of major capital improvements. New furniture for these rooms, as well as the music room, the reception area, and the front office, was generously donated to the senior center by the Massachusetts State Surplus Property Office and the Furniture Trust of Boston. This furniture was valued at more than $24,000.
